Diversity in student learning means that the door is open to accept the reality that an online classroom will consist of diverse learners from various backgrounds, cultures, education and geographic location. Student-centered instruction means that each student learns 'with' the teacher instead of 'from' the teacher. The learning is a joint venture consisting of collaborative activities where students are expected to direct part of their own learning when working with new content and ideas. Embracing diversity in this environment means awareness and openness. Cultural diversity in an online classroom that is student-centered may require additional sensitivity to work with learners with disabilities or who speak other languages. In my children’s literature course, videos will only be offered that are close-captioned and include a written transcript. Students will be given choices for many discussion questions, projects or assessments that best suit their personal needs. As the instructor, it is my intention to get to know my students and their needs early in the course through a background survey, ice-breaker discussion and introductory video or audio where students share a bit of their background. Diversity is also accommodated through an alternate list of assistive resources where students may turn for help if they run into unique challenges.
