Objective 3 and Assessment Rationale

Objective:

As a result of reading the 4 novels assigned, the student will evaluate and summarize the potential reasons authors cast characters as orphans in children’s literature by writing a one-page analysis paper in Google Docs and achieving writing proficiency level according to the rubric

Assessment Tool:

The chosen assessment tool for this objective is Google Docs.

 Assessment Tool Rationale:

Google Docs is an innovative word-processing tool that allows users to create reports, papers, presentations and even assessments using Google forms. It branches out beyond a simple Microsoft Word document for writing papers and allows more graphic design features at the click of a finger. In choosing Google Docs for this assessment activity, the tool also allows students to easily share their document by sending invites and collaborating with fellow students in real time. The analysis paper for this project is to be shared with and reviewed by co-students, and Google Docs makes it that much simpler than posting or emailing documents. Google Docs meets the needs of the student population by offering a professional tool that will be readily useful in almost any post-college workplace.

Google Docs is a valuable tool that many students may not be aware of. It can be used for future assignments in the way of reports, documents, presentations, spreadsheets, tests, or even drawings. Once a student has created their first basic report or paper in Google Docs, they now have at their fingertips a familiar tool worth exploring for more advanced projects as a valuable resource. As far as an activity that also works as a form of formative assessment, Google Docs was selected because of the potential for furthering skills.  Oxnevad (2022) states, "The built in research tool expands opportunities for students to engage in real-world writing and streamlines the process of creating links and citations with a hand one-click feature." The final criteria for having chosen Google Docs as an assessment tool was to also match the plagiarism-prevention plan idea of offering more activities that will allow students to practice creating proper citations when writing a report. Google Docs makes it not only convenient for the instructor to scan for plagiarism, it also entices students not to plagiarize because of the initial lesson that the teacher will offer on using the Google Docs citation quick links.
