Objective 4 and Assessment Rationale

Objective:

Given the video Symbols & Symbolism Explained, the student will classify important symbols from each text and connect their significance in a concept mapping chart by fulfilling all of the criteria in the project description with 90% accuracy.

 Assessment Tool:

The assessment tool for this assessment is an open selection from concept mapping software of the student’s preference such as Bubble.us, iMindmap, Popplet, Gliffy or Inspiration.

Assessment Tool Rationale:

As an assessment option for this module, using a concept map is beneficial for connecting learning objectives and monitoring the effectiveness of activities in the module in student learning. Concept mapping is brilliant for applying previous knowledge to new knowledge and perceiving obvious patterns and connections between individual facets as to how they relate. A student-created concept map will highlight the application and relation of symbols seen in the text readings to the actual plot, characters and those previously studied in this module.

For this activity, I introduce a bit of a personalized learning concept into the lessons by allowing students to choose the style of concept mapping software or program that meets their needs or interests. They can use an Android or iPad concept map app or they can use a standard free-online mapping software program from the provided list. With the diversified student population of the course, learners will feel comfortable with differing levels of software, aps and platforms. Their ability to choose what works best with their comfort zone will promote more creativity when the student is comfortable with their one choice. Concept maps are a fabulous way to get your students engaged with course material hands-on style (WWU, n.d.). It helps students to spot links between course objectives or concepts and theories studied. A concept map not only shows the instructor what the student can connect and understand, but also opens doors to their own comprehension as they may spot something previously unrecognized. Visual mapping as an assessment tool was chosen for this module specifically so the student can better understand how the symbols in texts support plot, theme and characterization and also relate similarly to the other texts in our course.
