The Concept Map

Concept mapping differentiates from mind mapping in the way that a concept map shows the relationship between 'concepts' and the related connections with other entities across the board. The concept map works to bring together the bigger picture of how all components involved on the map cross-connect, including how they originated. Mind mapping is slightly different in that it is hierarchy based and more systematic, offering less overall connectedness to the rest of the map. Concept maps make excellent learner-centered assessment tools in the online classroom. It employs the use of creativity and, with each student's map as one-of-a-kind, highlights the level of understanding the student has reached. Concept mapping is all about making cross-connections while integrating deeper layers of meaning throughout the map. As an assessment tool, the student's concept map is an excellent indicator of their higher-order thinking and how it falls on the Bloom's Taxonomy scale. If they are able to synthesize and analyze connected patterns in a map they designed, then they have moved beyond the level of understanding where learning takes place.
