The Pre-Course Survey
The ability to offer personalized online assessment that is student-centered requires the instructor to understand and know her audience of students. Offering a pre-course survey during the introduction week or the first week of class is a superb method for gathering information about the diversity in student population and need. Students may be joining an online course with learning disabilities; others with language or nationality differences. Either way, instructors should know their students. And, for the purpose of designing assessments that support learning objectives, the instructor can use a pre-course survey to inquire about student familiarity with either the course topic or online learning. A pre-course survey sets the stage for student-supported learning from the beginning.
